Healthier. Here, There, and Everywhere.

From cover crop to jet fuel

U of M research soared this fall when Delta Air Lines sent off a symbolic flight to mark the first use of a sustainable camelina-based aviation fuel blend in the MSP fuel supply. Camelina is a winter-hardy cover crop that can produce seed-based oil for low-carbon fuels. It also can protect soil, improve water quality, and provide new opportunities for farmers.

Every second counts

When a person’s heart stops beating, every minute that passes before getting to a hospital can mean the difference between life and death. John Sauer knows he’s “so, so lucky” to be a cardiac arrest survivor, thanks to a first-of-its-kind ER-on-wheels developed at the U. The U of M team is now sharing its groundbreaking procedures with hospitals across the country.

Lab on the lake

A University of Minnesota Duluth crew set sail aboard the Blue Heron research vessel to measure microplastic pollution in Lake Superior. What they’re learning has implications for how we can clean it up and create a legacy of environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

“To my family, this scholarship represents hope and a brighter future. It eases their financial burden and allows them to see me pursue my dreams with less worry. The donation has been an absolute lifeline, relieving me of a substantial part of my financial stress, and I am sincerely thankful. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and hope to one day pay it forward by helping others achieve their dreams, just as I have been supported on my journey.”

Mekede R., ‘26

President’s Emerging Scholars recipient

“This scholarship allowed me to fully embrace my internship experience in Florence and enrich both my academic and artistic career. I was able to grow my network, professionalism, and cultural competency through the work I did with clients, seeing the behind the scenes of how they run their business, and getting a taste of what international business is like.”

Akshat S., ‘25

UROP recipient

“The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) has been an integral part of my academic journey at the U. It has led me to become a better researcher while alleviating financial burdens. As an international student, managing tuition and daily living costs can be a constant challenge, especially when pursuing demanding research projects with extended time commitments. UROP allowed me to reduce my job hours significantly, allowing me to dedicate myself more fully to my studies and research.”
